THE HUMAYUN'S TOMB

(Declared UNESCO world heritage site in 1993)

This marvellous monument was built by the widow of the second Mughal emperor, Humayun, in the 16th century, where the emperor's soul rests. The Humayun's tomb is considred has one of the first examples of the beautiful Mughal architecture that began in India in the later years. It also known as the precursor monument to the famous Taj Mahal, built by Shahajehan, in Agra, a century later. The perfect symmetrical structure offers a marvelous view of the well-laid gardens and the fountains. Apart from the emperor, there are other tombs as well, for his queens and other family members.

 

THE QUTUB MINAR COMPLEX

(Declared UNESCO world heritage site in 1993)

One of the tallest mand-made brick minarets in the world is the Qutub Minar. The complex has some various monuments, like the Qutub-Ul-Islam mosque and the famous iron pillar, which has inscription from the Maurya period. Among all these, stands tall the tower, which has inscription of Koran with beautiful calligraphy and some designs as well. The construction was started by Qutubuddin Aibak in the 12th century and was rennovated by Illtumish again. 

The purpose of the Minar, however is not know. Some believe that it was built to give the Azan, a call for morning paryers. The iron pillar in the complex is a marvel initself, which stands testimony to history for centuries without getting rusted.

 

THE RED FORT COMPLEX DELHI

(Declared UNESCO world heritage site in 2007)

The 17th century fort, was built by Emepror Shahjehan, when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi and build a new city naming it Shahajahanbad. Located to the north of Delhi, it represents the glory of the Mughal rule and is considered the Highpoint of Mughal architectural, artistic aesthetic creativity. The architectural design of the structures built within the fort represents a blend of Persian, Timuri and Indian architectural styles. The fort was the residence of the Mughal emperors, till the mutiny against the Englsih began in 1857.

The famous Jama masjid was also built during the same time, which is right across the fort and also the market, called the chandni chowk, for the ladies of the fort to sho for.

All these monuments are oresnt in Delhi, the capital city of India. Apart from the UNESCO world heritage sites, there are many more monuments which can be visited in the city, which are of great historical importance. The Lodhi Gardens and the Tomb, the Safdarjung Tomb, the Puarana Qila, or the old fort and much more... the list is long.
